SOBER OCTOBER WRAP-UP 📊
How did Sober October go for you? |
Some have rolled their energy into November—others toasted (mindfully) at midnight on the 1st. Either way, you built willpower and proved to yourself that you’re in control. That’s the win.
👁️ OVE’S GUIDE TO
PROSTATE CANCER
🏥 What Is Prostate Cancer?
Prostate cancer starts in the small gland just below the bladder that helps make semen. It’s the most common cancer in men after skin cancer, especially in those over 50. While many cases grow slowly, others can spread aggressively if not caught early. Awareness is power.

🚨 Symptoms: What to Watch For
Early prostate cancer often has no symptoms, which is why screening is key. When signs do show up, they might include:
🔁 Frequent urination, especially at night
💧 Weak or interrupted urine stream
🔴 Blood in urine or semen
⚡ Pain during ejaculation or in the lower back, hips, or pelvis
⚠️ Difficulty starting or stopping urination
These could also be caused by other conditions like an enlarged prostate—but don’t ignore them.
🕰️ When to See a Doctor
Timing matters—especially if you're in a higher-risk group.
🧍♂️ Average risk? Start the conversation at age 50
🧬 High risk? (Black men or those with family history) Start at age 40 to 45
📆 PSA testing every 1 to 2 years is often recommended, depending on results
💡 Pro tip: Ask about PSA + MRI screening for more accurate results.
👥 Who’s Most at Risk?
Not all risk is created equal. Here’s who should stay extra alert:
👴 Men over 50
🧑🏿🦱 Black men (2x higher mortality risk)
👨👦 Men with a first-degree relative (father/brother) who had prostate cancer
Knowing your family history and ethnic risk can literally save your life.
📊 Stats Snapshot
Let the numbers speak:
🇨🇦 Canada – 1 in 8 men diagnosed; 1 in 30 die from it
🇺🇸 USA – 313,000 cases/year; 35,000 deaths
🇬🇧 UK – 55,000 cases/year; 12,000 deaths
🇯🇵 Japan – 100,000+ new cases/year; 14,000 deaths
🌍 Global – 1.4 million men diagnosed each year; 375,000 deaths
😬 Why Many Men Avoid Testing
It’s not just about the test—it’s about the mindset.
😨 Fear of diagnosis or treatment
🙈 Embarrassment about the digital rectal exam
🤷♂️ "I feel fine" mentality (even when cancer is silent)
🤐 Cultural pressure to "tough it out"
❌ Misconceptions about side effects or screening accuracy
✨ Reminder: Testing doesn’t make you weak—it makes you smart.
✅ Self-Check Awareness
Use this quick checklist as your personal nudge:
👀 Over 50 (or 40 with risk factors)?
💧 Changes in urination?
🧬 Family history of prostate cancer?
🦵 Back or pelvic pain?
🧑⚕️ Talked to a doctor about PSA testing yet?
If any answer is “yes,” it's time for a check-in.
🥦 Eat This, Not That (Prostate Edition)
Your diet plays a supporting role in prevention.
✅ Good for Prostate Health:
🍅 Tomatoes (rich in lycopene)
🥦 Cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower)
🐟 Omega-3 fish (salmon, mackerel)
🍵 Green tea, soy, and legumes
🚫 Try to Avoid:
🌭 Processed meats
🧀 Excess dairy or calcium supplements
🥩 High-fat red meat
🍟 Deep-fried or ultra-processed foods
📏 Bonus: Keep your waist under 102 cm / 40 in and aim for 150 minutes of moderate movement per week. Strength training twice a week = extra points.
