๐๏ธ OVEโS GUIDE TO
DECLINING BIRTHRATES
๐ How we got here
Fifty years ago, the great fear was overpopulation. Books like The Population Bomb warned of mass famine. Even into the 1990s, most people assumed the world population would spiral forever upward.
But as Hans Rosling reminds us in Factfulness: fertility falls naturally when people get healthier, wealthier, and more educated. More women finish school, more families live in cities, child survival improves, and birth rates drop.
Today, instead of โtoo many mouths,โ the issue is too few workers. And unlike famine, which technology and farming overcame, demographics move slowly โ once birth rates fall, they are very hard to reverse.

Imagine a future with fewer kids
๐ Top 10 countries/regions where fertility is falling fastest
(Total Fertility Rate, births per woman โ people are replaced at ~2.1)
๐ฐ๐ท South Korea โ 0.72
๐น๐ผ Taiwan โ 0.87
๐ญ๐ฐ Hong Kong โ 0.90
๐จ๐ณ China โ ~1.0โ1.1
๐ฏ๐ต Japan โ 1.15
๐ช๐ธ Spain โ 1.19
๐ฎ๐น Italy โ 1.20
๐จ๐ฆ Canada โ 1.33
๐ฉ๐ช Germany โ 1.46
๐บ๐ธ United States โ 1.60
๐ Top 10 countries where fertility is still high or rising
(Mostly Sub-Saharan Africa & South Asia โ sources: UN World Population Prospects 2022)
๐ณ๐ช Niger โ 6.7
๐น๐ฉ Chad โ 6.4
๐ธ๐ด Somalia โ 6.0
๐จ๐ฉ DR Congo โ 5.9
๐ฒ๐ฑ Mali โ 5.8
๐ณ๐ฌ Nigeria โ 5.3
๐ฆ๐ด Angola โ 5.2
๐ฆ๐ซ Afghanistan โ 4.4
๐ต๐ฐ Pakistan โ 3.4
๐ช๐น Ethiopia โ 3.0
(Even these numbers are lower than 20 years ago; Niger was over 7.5 just two decades ago.)

Global Population Projections
๐ง Why Itโs Happening
Older parents: First-birth age โ ๐บ๐ธ ~27.5 | ๐จ๐ฆ ~31.6 | ๐ฏ๐ต ~31.0
Metabolic health: Obesity, diabetes, and underweight disrupt ovulation & sperm.
Food quality: Ultra-processed diets hurt fertility; Mediterranean diets help.
Environment: Pollution, PFAS, BPA, and heat stress reduce conception odds.
Lifestyle: Poor sleep, high stress, smoking, vaping, and alcohol lower chances.
Work stress: Long, unpredictable hours discourage family planning.
๐ข Workplace Wellness Matters
โ Predictable schedules
โ Secure jobs with stability
โ Affordable childcare + housing
โ Work-life balance
โ Peace of mind = confidence to start families
๐จ Why Care?
Declining fertility reshapes society:
Fewer workers โ labour shortages & slower growth
More elderly โ higher dependency ratios & aging societies
More taxes โ younger generations pay for pensions & healthcare
Rise of algorithms & robots ๐ค โ automation fills gaps, but not the warmth, creativity, or care that humans bring
๐ก Closing thought
For decades, the worry was too many people. Now the challenge is too few babies, too late in life, in too toxic an environment.
The answer? Wellness. Healthier bodies, healthier workplaces, healthier societies.
