🥤🍽️☠️ How to consume less microplastics

Hello Viewer,

We’re surrounded and invaded by plastic. Not just in our oceans and streets, but in our blood, lungs, brain, and even sperm. Microplastics, once thought to be harmless particles, are now emerging as one of the greatest silent threats to human health and future generations.

In edition #103, we break down these microsurprises and solutions.

MICROPLASTICS

🧬 What Are Microplastics?

They’re tiny plastic particles, <5mm in size, formed by the breakdown of larger plastics or intentionally manufactured for products like cosmetics. Found in water, air, food, clothing, and even human tissues, these particles are nearly impossible to avoid—but not impossible to reduce.

🚨 How Microplastics Harm Your Health

1️⃣ Chronic Inflammation 🔥
Trigger immune responses and fuel diseases like arthritis, autoimmune conditions, and heart disease.

2️⃣ Oxidative Stress
Free radicals from microplastics damage cells, speeding up aging and raising cancer risk.

3️⃣ Hormonal Disruption 🌀
Plastics like BPA and phthalates mimic hormones, harming fertility, puberty, and child development.

4️⃣ Tissue Accumulation 🧠🫁
Found in the lungs, liver, kidneys, and brain—linked to cognitive decline, reduced detox ability, and respiratory disease.

5️⃣ Toxin Carriers ☣️
They absorb and carry heavy metals and endocrine disruptors into your body—amplifying harm.

6️⃣ Gut Microbiome Disruption 🦠
Damage to gut lining and bacterial balance can lead to digestion issues, leaky gut, and immune dysfunction.

7️⃣ Neurological & Fertility Impact 🧪
Particles cross the blood-brain barrier, possibly affecting mood, memory, and brain development. Fertility drops and sperm quality plummet—echoed by Dr. Shanna Swan’s dire prediction:

“By 2045, the median sperm count could hit zero.”

📉 Real Stats (France & Beyond)

A 2024 French study shocked scientists:

  • Glass bottles contained more microplastics than plastic ones due to paint flakes from metal caps.

  • Beer in glass: 134 MPs/L (microplastics per litre)

  • Cola in glass: 103 MPs/L

  • Plastic bottles or cans: Often <3 MPs/L

  • Even water in glass had 181% more microplastics than in plastic.

🧠 PFAS (forever chemicals) also show up more in glass-bottled sparkling water than in still water in PET plastic.

👩‍⚕️ What the Experts Say

Dr. Rhonda Patrick

Dr. Shanna Swan

  • Calls microplastics and hormone-disrupting chemicals a global fertility crisis.

  • Links plastics to the 50% drop in sperm count since 1973.

  • Warns that endocrine disruptors affect not just you, but your children and grandchildren.

What You Can Do

🧴 Reduce: Say no to single-use plastics, synthetic fabrics, and microbeads.
💧 Filter: Use reverse osmosis or nanofiltration systems.
🥗 Eat Fresh: Ditch processed and overly packaged foods.
🧼 Clean the Cap: If drinking from glass bottles, wipe or rinse the metal cap area.
👕 Wear Natural Fibers: Cotton > polyester.
🔥 Detox Tools: High-fiber diet, regular sweating (exercise/sauna), and clean hydration.

💬 Why This Matters

Microplastics are more than a pollution problem. They’re a health crisis and a generational threat. Your everyday choices—how you eat, drink, store, and move—are your defence.

🧠 Try This

Challenge of the Week:
🚫 Ditch 1 daily plastic item.
💡 Switch to a reusable version (e.g., water bottle, lunch container, wrap, or toothbrush).

🧠 MINDFUL CHALLENGE

MICROPLASTIC HUNT

Goal: Spot and log hidden sources of microplastics in your home — then take one step to replace or reduce them.

How to Play

1️⃣ Set a Timer ⏱️ — Give yourself 15–20 minutes.
2️⃣ Room-by-Room Search 🏠 — Move through your kitchen, bathroom, laundry area, and storage spaces.
3️⃣ Spot the Sources 👀 — Look for:

  • Single-use plastics (bottles, bags, wrap)

  • Synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon, acrylic)

  • Plastic cooking utensils & containers

  • Cosmetics or cleaners with microbeads

  • Old non-recyclable items (#3, #6, #7 resin codes)
4️⃣ Log Your Finds 📓 — Write them down or snap photos.
